Historical: The "Gendarmerieeinsatzkommando
(GEK)" was reorganized and renamed "Einsatzkommando (EKO) Cobra"
in July, 2002. After a major restructuring of Austrian SWAT units the only two
remaining tactical teams are the WEGA in Vienna and the Cobra for the rest of
the country. This means that all 8 SEG teams and 13 out of 14 MEK teams (the
territorial SWAT teams of the Federal Police) disappeared at the end of 2002.
The WEGA, also considered a MEK but enjoying wider competencies, continues to
operate in the Vienna territorial division of the Federal Police. WEGA is
subdivided into a PEK branch ("Polizei-Einsatzkommando" for crisis
situations, entries, etc) and a MEK ("Mobiles Einsatzkommando" mainly
supporting patrol units when situations are getting complicated and real
dangerous). Since July 1st, 2005, WEGA/PEK became part of EKO Cobra, but
remains at Vienna.
